Okay so I over reacted. When I woke up this morning there was a txt from jsp telling me not to go to the store and that he would pick up the rolls on his way in. So he missed his manners but made up for it later.
Anyway that is not the point of my story. I am making pot roast for dinner. I growing up in a house with my mother who is an excellent cook I fins most people's version of dishes well...so-so at best. Roast is one of those meals.
Most people make the dire mistake of putting the meat in a crock pot this just makes everything mushy and weird tasting.
The proper way to cook a roast starts with the meat.
- You need half a stick of butter (not margarine) and you rub that baby down. Get it in all the little nooks and crannys until its covered in a gooey fat layer.
- Sprinkle liberally with coarse ground salt and pepper.
- On high heat warm up a pan on the stove top. Put the big hunk of meat in and brown each side for about 1minute each. (it should be dark brown...well seared but not burnt) This seals in the flavor or at least that's what my mom says.
Prepare the pan...
- Drop the meat in the roasting pan.
- Fill the skillet with water to get all the yummies up and dump it the roaster. I usually use about 4-5 cups but it depends on alot of your things, at the end the water should come up about half way on the meat. (keep in mind you are adding veggies so about 1/4 the height of the meat is a good guess at this point, you can always add more later
- Add spices to the liquid. I like to use beef bullion, tastefully simple seasoned salt, tyme, and just a pinch of chili spice. (the prepackaged slow cooker spice packets are pretty good but I highly suggest adding the chili spice it gives it a little kick.
- Chop up carrots, celery and red potato's.
- Cook at 300 for 4-6 hours depending on how big the roast is...when you press it with a spoon and it easily dents and can be broken up its done.
Gravy time...
- I don't like gravy so I don't make it (if you like gravy...make it yourself)
- What I do is take all the meat and veggies out and put the roaster directly on the stove top.
- I boil it down to about half the original liquid volume.
- Tada! Good for a drizzel over the meat or veggies...and there is always plenty left over for belmont and rosa's dinner.

I've spent pretty much every second of everyday making flashcards for my boards studying...I've made over 1000 so far. Fun no? Okay so I have had a little fun. I had way to much planned this weekend. On saturday a church brunch, and a date with JSP. Then on Sunday a superbowl party. I ended up clearning my schedule except for JSP who insisted that we go out because I needed a day off. So on Saturday afternoon I dove to Albert lea and met up with jsp where we embarked on a two and a half hour roadtrip for pie.
We arrived at Langes in Pepstone, MN where I got a burger and fries topped off with the best cherry pie alamode ever. Such a roadtrip is quite a bit to ask of a new relationship but we spent the time in the car with the music low and much conversation about (I don't remember what) but it was good.
After lunch we went over the border to Souix Falls, SD and got lost (he refused to ask for directions) after he turned the wrong way on a one way and having 5 cars charging front on to us I enlisted my wonderful ipod gps to route us in. We arrived at the raddison and due to our late check in got upgraded to a suit on the "private access" floor. We actually got to put the key card in the elevator to get to it. AND president Obama stayed there during one of his many campaigning stops. I probably stayed in the same bed as some secret service man.
We settled in watched tv, went swimming, sat in the sauna and ordered room service. JSP planned everything, paid for everything, and pretty much attended to my every whim. It was pretty good :)
It was just the break I needed. Last week was stressful. Between being under the weather, studying, sick grandmothers and general annoyances of life a day off was exactly what I needed. I just can't say how much fun I had. We really just had a fun time together. I'm no officially re-smitten. I guess that nice-guy thing isn't so bad after all.

Cheers! January 02, 2009 |
New years is my favorite holiday. I always have new toys to play with and with the family get togethers over I am in a good mood in my own house. Since being 21 I can't remember a bad new years...its a friend holiday where I surrounded by the people who are closest to me. The people who will hold my hair if I puke without a lecture and with whom I will point out shady allyway corners perfect for pit stops. Yep its all very glamorous.
For many year's we would ring in the new year in Green Bay which is as far as I'm concerned the liquor capital of the world, but when Heff and Hairnet moved to Nebraska Alice and I were left to improvise our fun.
Two years ago Alice, Rory and I went to lacrosse. Alice spent a couple hours talking cops throwing some guy out in the street she knew into detox....she then drove him home (he didn't live in town) The I think Rory lost her walet. I probably wore bad shoes because I do belive I was alone for a long time. We went home before bar close.
Then last year we attended Cobie's bash at his apartment. We cooked, we drank, I met new people. I talked with them until 5am about utopian health care. I think we drove everyone else crazy.
Although my last two new years were good they lacked that reckless quality which I think is a must-have once a year. No one threw up in a car, no one picked a fight (ahem Alice), no one went missing for hours only to be found trashed at the bar next door. Okay none of that happened last night either but still it was closer.
Alice, George, Bag and I set out for B&K's house. I always forget where they live. It really isn't that complicated I usually get to within a couple blocks of it. There is really no excuse I've probably been to their house 20 times. Sigh. I give up my wandering and call them. No answer. So I call K&E, after being informed to look for a van with ribs written across the side...(true story) I leave the car and begin wandering the street looking in windows.
Upon out arrival we were welcomed with pomegranate martinis, dice and whiskey shots, vodka + fresca (the ORIGINAL citrus beverage), plum wine and mountains of food. The was talking in a cold smoky garage. Shocking stories, work stories, gossip, laughter, snorting and several trips to the bathroom. We played rock band, we snowboarded, counted down the last second of 08'...it was good.
I started the new year right...I woke up with a stomach ache, headache, coal-miner's lung and generally smelly. Just how it should be.
Next year....back to green bay.

My kind face has struck again.
Alice, Hairnet, Heff and myself leave to go for some post-bar munchies at Subway. We stand in line for what feels like forever. I was last and quite frankly not paying any attention to what was going on behind me. I get a footlong pizziola (quite possibly the least healthy menu item one can procure at a subway) and head to the register.
Ava: May I have the meal please?
Sandwich Artist: Go ahead
Ava: Huh?
Sandwich Artist: Just go ahead and go... (he smiles at me)
Ava: Really are you sure?
Sandwich Artist: Yep have a good night.
Awesome free food. So I go and collect my beverage and chips cool ranch doritos because I like to have bad breath all the time and head to my table.
Ava: Hey guys, I have a question. (looking down all coy and innocent) Did you have to pay for your sandwiches?
They all look at me
Group: Uhhh yeah.
Ava: Looking modest, turning my head slightly and shrugging my shoulders possibly twirling a length of hair between my fingertips. The guy just let me have it.
Alice: You bitch and your fucking kind face.

So I headed to Lacrosse for my super awesome birthday shenanigans. The festivities were to be held on Saturday July 19th, a day premature but logistically best for the observation of such an occasion. Much like Washington's birthday is observed on a Monday to give children and people with cushy jobs a three day vacation.
Just so you get the full effect I will start at 12am...I arrive downtown, Alice is drunk and convinces me and Rory to meet her at a bar. Normally I would not object but seeing as I had left in a hurry I was still wearing my lovely burgundy scrubs complete with sensible white crocks. I had half a beer and played cards while Alice flittered about.
After the bar we got to Alice's where she set us up with a movie and passed out. Alice is frugal which is endearing in most cases, however its less endearing when it comes to her "air conditioning" which consists of a fan that used to isolate. I keep my thermostat set at 70 and pay the bill almost gleefully in summertime. It is a luxury I have come to require. I'm convinced the heatstroke lead to my headache and resulting insomnia. The movie was over at 4am, I checked my facebook and myspace then settled for some quizzes on okcupid. After taking a quiz on lucid dreaming ability I ended up on wikipedia which entertained me until the sun rose at about 6:30am and I was finally ready for bed.
I slept until 1:30pm listened to NPR while reading my book and ate a tomato sandwich for lunch. At 5:30 we were finally dressed and went to buzzard billy's for blackened chicken salad and a side of french fries with the best ranch dressing ever.
We then went to G & S's house because they have air conditioning & cable and watched T.V. until 11:45. It was then that my dream of going out died swiftly with an impromptu trip to Mc Donalds. I should have been having a free birthday shot or ringing a bell at some college bar but instead I was ordering a no.2 no onions minutes before closing and not caring that the poor schmucks serving me were most likely annoyed that they had to clean the grill yet again before frolicking off to fun and frivolity. Even though that was me only 5years ago.
So am I upset that my birthday bash was well...totally lame? No, not really because I'm not the 5yrs ago me. I would feel stupid ringing a birthday bell (although truth be told I've never rang one). I don't want people singing to me at restaurants and I don't really even care that I can get a free entree if I bring 3 other diner's with me for my birthday meal.
Ava's birthday observed started when I turned 21 and was a good summer excuse to get together and do something a little outside the ordinary. Over the years it has made up all the trauma left from never getting to sit in the birthday chair at school or passing out cupcakes to my classmates. But maybe its time to move on.
Today I am 27. I have the feeling each birthday leading up to 30 is going to be hard for me. Not that I feel any younger than that age in fact if I got to pick my age non-chronologically I would probably choose early 30's but its a reminder...of how my life is off balance.
In some ways I feel ahead of the curve: family relationships, friends, job, financial stability, mental security all that sort of stuff is good.
Then the sad lame Ava pops up where I realize that relationship-wise I may as well be 15. Really no improvement, no hopefuls. And each time I log into some wretched networking site and see a photo of a friend's baby or or a couple hugging in front of a sunset on their honeymoon I can't help but thinking. Did I totally miss the bus?
I'm told these things all happen on different time tables. I'm told I'm smart, funny, caring, hell even beautiful once in awhile but these people are my friends. I can't help but blame myself...at least a little. I find myself saying if you just lost the weight, if you didn't cry at every animated movie, if you didn't flick off that guy that cut you off in traffic, if you didn't waste so much time dating the wrong people, if you weren't as successful, if you didn't like weird music or documentaries or talking about random articles on wikipedia, you would be that girl in front of the sunset.
But in truth most of these things I really don't want to change. Which makes me feel a bit destined for a life of being perpetually single. Am I too stubborn to change? Is there really room in my life for another person? Would I even give Mr. Right a chance? My honest answer is no. Even if he showed up on my doorstep tomorrow I would probably dismiss him and not even know he was there in the first place. This is what makes me sad.

MN Zoo July 14, 2008 |
Saturday I slept in until 10:30, showered and discovered I had forgotten both toothpaste and deodorant. Which caused me to buy little travel sized ones at the hotel gift shop for twice their retail value. I got to the zoo a little early with no problem those detours are much easier to follow in daylight. Work friends had more difficulty, so i entered the zoo parked myself on bench and read my book while overlooking the swan lake. It was a perfect day to go...75, sunny and not a hint of humidity.
I've always loved zoos. My father and I would take yearly trips at or near Christmas eve. I've only recently be reintroduced to zoos in the summer, its busier, stinkier, but everything is open and you get to catch all the special summer goings on.
I also like taking pictures and there are endless opportunities. Unfortunately I was not smart enough to charge my battery so it died after only about ten pictures. So what was my favorite part of the zoo trip? The butterfly garden. Yeah I know I've been giving butterflies a bad rap but they had a nice little guide so I could identify them and the garden area was just gorgeous! The chrysalises were all on display and labeled and butterfly's were everywhere you had no trouble finding the ones on the list.
After 6hours of walking around we were pretty well spend and went to the embassy suites hotel. Very nice and excellent customer service... seriously EXCELLENT. It was a little pricey but well worth the added cost. There was a open bar happy hour for two hours which we participated in I got 2-screw drivers.
We then went to the liquor store to stock the fridge and bought a pack of cards and then freshened up a bit before dinner. Instead of driving around buzzed we partook in the hotel's restaurant which was 20% off since we were staying there. We had crab cakes and a warm goat cheese tart and anti-pasta platter. For my main course I had a barley risotto with mushrooms and something else in the sauce we suspect is nutmeg, Gorgonzola cheese and beef medallions. The meal was rounded off with a layered chocolate cake with Baily's and creme filling. Divine.
Back at the room I cracked open a fat-tire beer and we played go-fish and 500, then preceded to have cigarettes off the tiny balcony in our non-smoking room. The door only opened about 3-inches, just enough for you to stick your hand out. We caught up chit chatted about the people I used to work with and eventually on to the theories of friendship, love and family. I was a perfect weekend.

It's been about 6 weeks since I went grocery shopping. My pantry was full of "stuff" I never got around to eating, i figure with no better options around that box of rice and can on 2yr old soup didn't look so bad. Yesterday I ate my LAST package of generic ramen noodles for dinner. I sat on my couch and said to myself when I was in college at least I ate name-brand ramen for dinner and realized it was time.
I entered walmart and was in awe of the produce section. Like a refugee of war I looked at the vast fresh fruits and vegetables covered in rainbows of water spray convinced I had reached the promised land. (I've obviously been away from grocery stores too long if walmart's produce is breathtaking). I loaded my cart with red peppers, watermelon, strawberries, canary melon and cucumbers.
I even bought other healthy stuff and purchased sigh...diet coke. I have long been convinced that diet coke or anything containing artificial sweeteners has caused me migraines so I avoid them at all costs. Although I do get headaches often without such triggers so maybe its just bad luck and I'm willing to give it another whirl...only a 6-pack worth though and I have a two liter of regular coke in case of emergencies.
Perhaps the most surprising part of my day is I took the time to rinse and chop my fruits and veggies putting them in transparent glass bowls which make them oh so pretty and easily accessible. This makes them much less likely to rot away in my refrigerator. Although since I have about 3gallons of fruit in my fridge I will probably end up with pink watermelon diarrhea and still left over mushy moldy fruit but hey its better than the crap I'm used to eating.

Tapes June 23, 2008 |

I am fat. This is not news. And quite frankly I know just about all there is to know about loosing weight. I've done points, I done L.A. weight loss, I've gone to the healthy living center, I've done that place in Winona which is like curves with a diet plan and the mayo learn program...twice. Seen a nutritionist...several times in two different attempts. Here I am today a good 20+ my top weight ever.
I talked to my doctor who basically says there is nothing she can do for me my cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and thyroid are all normal. It seems despite all my efforts I'm healthy at least on paper. But here is the thing in my latest spiral out of control "more to love" is finally starting to take a toll on me. I have horrible planters fascitis which makes me analyze all shoes for arch support rather than fashion. When at home I wear Birkenstock religiously (I am not a hippie so this isn't exactly acceptable in my mind). My knees hurt after I am forced to exercise...and by exercise I mean more than one flight of stairs, and my back pretty much always hurts. Before I end up seeing the grandcannon in my hoverround something needs to be done.
So the time has come for me to give this another go. Anytime Ive been successful at loosing weight it has been just me. No logs, no meetings or measuring cups just some freaking common sense and a little bit of letting go of my self-loathing. My wieght is a mental thing I hoard it like money, console myself with an extra helping of butter rather than tissues. And wallow in self pitty while watching tv.
My plan is to focus on one thing each week and build upon it. No pound or callorie goals. Then on Monday's Ill do my a blog or blog-et about how the week went so you don't have to suffer this on a regular basis...all though I can change the rules at anytime and bore you at my whim. HAHA the power of being the site moderator!
Week 1 Goal: Just because your fat doesnt mean you should act like it.
- Bike or Walk a total of 15 miles
- Go to the healthy living center once..and spend a minimum of 30minutes there (time in the locker room does not count Ava so don't even think about it). No exercise goals while there just physically being there and uncomfortable while Mrs.size2 with her 2.0carrot wedding ring is enough of a goal. Oh and also any mileage at the healthy living center totally counts towards the15mile goal.
I must admit going to the gym is right up there with getting a papsmear on my list of things to do. However I know that I feel better when I am moving. Last year I did pretty good over summer because I could limit my moving around the privacy of my own neighborhood but when the snow fell I went back to sloth-state. This means even though its way easier and less intimidating to exercize at home I have to forcefully integrate the healthy living center into my life...sucky.
However procrastination is my game so I dusted off the bike instead of gathering the equipment and courage needed for the gym. I love riding my bike because I get to sit and I'm less likely to sprain an ankle while ridding where walking is a dicey proposition with my lackluster coordination (lets not even entertain the notion of me running). The problem with biking is I can only imagine how ridiculous I look. Is it better to be a fat slob on a couch watching TV and eating a pint...excuse me gallon of ice cream or be a fat girl on a bike sweaty red and panting. Neither paints a particularly glamorous picture. Fat and sweaty and out in the world I still feel like a looser, but at least not a hopeless looser.
P.S. If anyone says any cute puns about being a "good" looser as in loosing weight I will vomit (of course being stricken with bulimia has been a childhood dream of mine however unpopular that might sound).

Picture Stolen From Efikim Gallery.
No this is not a movie review. In fact I haven't even seen the movie "the bucket list" but in my daydreams avoiding the work I brought home tonight I have decided to make my own version.
Now I haven't pre-prepared this so I may have to revise items later. Then again I tend to over analyze so maybe spur of the moment is good for me.
Things to do before I kick the bucket
1- Take two months to tour the following countries: Italy, Great Britain, France, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. 3 weeks: Japan & China, 3 weeks: Australia & New Zealand. I would stay in low budget hotels and take the train...visit museums and eat at local cafes I think I can do it for $50,000.
2- Clean out my entire house and sell anything that I do not love (get rid of that chair I don't like anymore) or need (have not touched in the past month). Any exceptions or keepsakes must be able to fit in a cedar chest, donate or throw away what did sell. Move into a new house that's small, paint every room a different color and actually decorate it to be mine!
3- Compile all my blogs and my journals into a physical book. Have it bound and printed. Put it in a safety deposit box.
4- Write a letter to everyone that has made a difference in my life. To thank them for everything they have done for me. I have passed up so many opportunities to thank people that have helped me in life. Find as many addresses as I can, and send the letters.
5- Shop at co-op, don't make or eat anything made by someone else for 1 full month. (Only visit the produce, dairy and meat sections). If its in a box, bottle or in a restaurant its off limits.
6- Be a mentor or parent to a child. Foster, adopt, have my own whatev.
7- Fix into a size 12...without sucking in after eating a large meal (i.e. a comfortable size 12)
8- Do something amazing for my parents.
9- Give $1,000 dollars anonymously to someone who needs it
10- Read up on at least 10 religions, write what I like and don't like from each one. When I'm done write my final draft of my own beliefs.

Sceen: Smiley and Ava are sitting down to thier second dinner of the evening.
Smiley: (looking down at her bowl of soup) Isnt each can of soup like 3 servings
Ava: 2.5...so like you, me and a 5 year old child should eat that as one meal
Smiley and Ava look down at the rather smallish bowl of soup
Smiley: See I think of one bowl of soup as being a meal
Ava: I think of a bowl of soup and a 5 year old as a meal.

My buddy Rory had come to visit me this weekend on Friday afternoon around 5pm she rolled into the driveway and I was so hungry I half contemplated eating her. After the mandatory 20minutes of I don't care where do you want to go we decided on TGI Fridays for dinner (since it was Friday we felt the restaurant choice more than appropriate).
We were seated promptly and it was early enough that the restaurant really wasn't that busy yet. Our waitress came over and K ordered some veggie pasta thing and added a side salad. I ordered the Cobb salad no meat or olives and some mozzarella sticks for us to share. Things look good right?
Time passes someone comes over with an appetizer….not out appetizer we send them away. Rory's salad came she finishes and we are still waiting on those mozz stick. Annoyance is starting to set in. Then our meal comes (ok at this point I couldn't give to shits about the mozz sticks I was just staving and wanted to eat them right away). She says oh you never got your appetizer Ill get that right away. I look at my salad meat laden as it is I stop her as she is running off. I kindly tell her that my salad is not supposed to have meat on it. She looks at me like I have three eyes and grabs it and runs off.
Okay I remember this scenario from when I was a vegetarian before. Why is it so difficult to not put meat on something that typically has meat? First of all I am paying for this meat that usually a restaurant would charge 3+ dollars to add and all I ask for that 3+ dollar overpayment is them to not put it on my salad. Am I being unreasonable? Le sigh I have learned to accept it though and it doesn't really bother me when I have to send it back.
A little to quickly for my taste she returns with the salad and mozz sticks she says she will send a manager over and wisks away again can she not ask if everything is ok? My salad is looking tosseled and angry. There is no visible meat but the waitress is off before I can inspect. First bite I take a piece of chicken is stuck to my lettuce ARGH!
Ok this is the end of my acceptableness. You do not take food back into a kitchen scrape of the meat and return it to someone. People who order something without meat aren't doing so because they don't really like it, they are doing it because they f'ing don't eat meat. Not to mention the fact that if picking it off was okay with me doing you think I would have just done it myself? Do you think you are going to get one by me? And for Christ sakes it's a salad it probably would take less time to make a new one than to pick out the meat.
Waitress did not return for at least 10minutes and then it was to ask if we wanted dessert and dropped of the bill.
No manager ever came.
I was without water for most of the meal.
I begrudgingly paid full price and I left no tip. I will not be returning to Fridays any time soon.

I was out to dinner at Outback and had just finished my meal and was beached in the booth waiting for Ed to finish his meal. Two ladies come and sit down in a booth across the aisle from us. They chatter are chattering at a respectable volume when one of the ladies cell phone rings. First of all its loud and something obnoxious like the intro from the A-team. She flips open her phone and starts talkingyeah shes a screamer. Wow lady I dont think the person in the parking lot needed to know you had Burger King for lunch.
She fortunately hangs up the phone after a brief conversation for which I was temporarily thankful. But little was I to know the atrocities that were to follow. She did not replace her phone into her purseno that would be INSANE! She proceeded to flip through all her options for cell phone rings. Pausing briefly after each one to explain its origin and where she downloaded it from.
Oh wait. She would say to her compainion. You have to hear this one its Baby Got Back!
Oh and heres the polyphonic version. I just couldnt decide which I liked better. She continued on like this for quite some time.
I had to endure:
- The crazy frog
- The Devil Went Down to Georgia
- Something by Nickleback
- And of course the CanCan
This is by no means a complete list I am not able to remember all of them since my brain has begun to block the experience out as some sort of defense mechanism. So I leave you with this. I plead to you my general public if you must pick a unique cell phone ring for all of your friends do so in the privacy of you own home. Thank yourant concluded.

So I have this uncanny ability to attract horrid service dinning establishments. Thus I have many places that I am boycotting. affectionately known as the list. I restaurant can easily prevent itself from being on my list by:
A. Just doing their goddamn job in the first place
B. Compensating me for my mental distress.
C. Being really really good so I cant resist eating there.
Today is Ed's b-day and we decided to his Coldstone creamery for a bit of a late nice ice-cream snack. Coldstone is a bit pricey so we always like to get a pint each and take it to go. Its not much more expensive than getting a regular size and it in theory has the opportunity to last longer. Of course I bet you can imagine how well that goes.
So we enter and there are 4 teenage girls behind the counterthere are about 4 teens in front of us. They obviously all knew each other and were talking. About a year later the foursome gets their ice-cream (which by the way wasnt paid for) and one of the girls takes the time to help us.
Help is a creative word to use here since she was just standing in front us looking annoyed. I let Ed go first and he ordered a pint of peanut butter ice cream. She scooped up a bit that looked way to small to be a pint. So as shes adding the mix-ins I said (much louder than necessary). Ed HONEY YOU KNOW WITH A PINT YOU CAN GET THREE MIX-INS IF YOU WANT. This chick was too oblivious. She puts the ice cream in a like-it cupwhich is code for the smallest size they sell.
Okay tangent but what the fuck is up with sizing like that. Why cant it just be Small, Medium and Large? I dont understand the difference between large, Biggie and Grande and when you start throwing in gotta have it you are asking for a beating in my opinion.
I have taken at starbucks to ordering a SMALL mocha latte. Its not that I dont understand the Starbucks lingo Im completely fine with saying skinny or no whip that has a purpose. Saying Tall instead of small? Theres just no need. When I ask for my small coffee the little girl behind her counter cocks her empty little head and inevitably asks Do you mean tall? I stare her down and want to say NO you over-caffeinated bitch I mean small. However seeing I dont want my coffee spit in I just nod. Now she thinks Im the idiot.
